You can usually find pneumatic forklifts in shipping and warehouse operations. Also called pump trucks or pallet trucks, they are used to transport products and materials around on wooden pallets utilizing metal forks which are mounted on a wheeled counterweight. The counterweight has a pump that can raise the forks off the ground. A pallet truck is intended to be operated by a single person.
To be able to prevent loosing control while raising heavy loads, pallet trucks must always be operated carefully. Equipment must be checked before operating. Clear the wheels area of any obstacle. Make sure that the handle could turn smoothly. The pallet should be stacked carefully to ensure that nothing will fall off during transportation.
To be able to release air in the pump and lower the forks, squeeze the lever located on the inside of the metal loop on the end of the pallet truck's handle. The forks could then be pushed into the slots of the pallet. The forks must be at the center in order to ensure even distribution of the pallet's weight across them. Lift the forks from the ground by pumping the pneumatic lift's handle until the pallet has cleared the ground completely. Do not lift the pallet very high or the forklift could unbalance.
Move the pallet by pulling on the handle and then dragging it behind you. It is dangerous to push the pallet ahead of you as the thrust can cause it to go out of control. Take turns slowly and don't try to stop suddenly. Stop gradually, squeeze the lever, and the forks would lower to the ground. Finally, remove the forks from the pallet by pulling them out. Return the pallet truck to its permanent place.
