They need to be physically able to drive a forklift; hence, they require the physical ability of using both hands, both feet and both arms. The forklift driver should ideally be able to stand for an 8 hour shift. In most work environments, they would be allowed to have two short coffee breaks and a half-hour lunch break during the day. It is vital that the forklift operator not be prone to rage of any kind or reckless driving.
Training
Forklift training is usually done on the job. Training will often include control and safety training, which can be completed in a variety of ways. These may include testing, videos and lectures. A performance test will also be conducted on the lift truck. After the tests have been done successfully, a license can be issued. This license should be renewed according to state and provincial laws and according to shop procedures. If you get the chance to finish your lift truck training on the job, it is a great idea and it is one more skill you could include in your resume.
Job Locations
In larger establishments such as manufacturing or retail facilities, lift truck drivers may work in a warehouse department. Lift truck operators can also work in other fields, depending on the businesses requirements. Forklifts are extremely useful pieces of equipment that can be found on both logging sites and construction sites as well as in most receiving and shipping facilities, ports and train yards.
